webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0

With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 — which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta

This one’s for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite “time machine for Windows” back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It’s a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited – Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you’re interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Add playback hotkeys to Amazon Cloud Player with a Chrome extension

Sure, Amazon’s Cloud Player works — as long as you’re in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering — but it’s fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we’d like to see added — but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don’t have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you’ll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you’re in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn’t have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well — just make sure you don’t set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome’s built-in keyboard shortcuts.

Jeff Curran hopes UFC will give him one chance at flyweight after UFC on Fuel 3 loss

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jeff_Curran_180.jpg

Jeff Curran’s decision loss to Johnny Eduardo on Tuesday at UFC on Fuel 3 was his second straight since being brought back to the UFC last October. Counting his last run in the WEC, he’s lost six straight under the Zuffa banner.

As he nears his 35th birthday in September, Curran’s worried this latest loss may be his last shot in the UFC, and thus his MMA career.

“I am at a huge fear for my job and career with UFC,” he said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. “Knowing that they don’t like to sign older guys past 35 years old due to athletic commission complications, and me nearing 35 in September, being dropped from UFC would mean the end of my career.”

“I am determined to get a fight at 125. I feel the weight cut to 135 isn’t even a cut at all. I am a smaller boned guy who has had to stay big over the years and now I can finally see that a lower weight is a chance for me and my time is running short. “

Curran is a near-50-fight veteran of the sport, who has competed around the world and in numerous organizations over his 14-year career. With a number of intriguing matchups in the UFC’s newly created flyweight division, Curran’s just hoping the UFC will give him one more chance to get a win inside the Octagon.

“There is a few guys I would like to fight at 125 to have a final shot at proving at the end of the day that I am just a little guy but capable of doing bigger things than I have been able to display,” Curran said. “Yasuhiro Urushitani, John Lineker, or even a rematch with Kid Yamamoto at 125 would be a perfect fit, if either one of them coming off losses has the (expletive) to test themselves against me these days.”

“Japan, Brazil, USA … doesn’t matter to me,” he continued. “I pray UFC can recognize this and call my management. UFC will at least end up with a war once again. Nothing to lose. I hope the fans get behind me here. I planned on dropping down after a win over Eduardo. I lost the fight but here I am.”

“I gave my life to the sport, and feel I have had a curse hanging over me and losing decisions has become the norm on beating me. I know that 125 is stiff competition, but nobody has a reach advantage, and that’s one of my worst body types to fight: tall and lanky.”

Penick’s Analysis: I hope the UFC gives him one more chance. He’s had a number of really close fights in that six-fight Zuffa losing streak, with all but his loss to Urijah Faber (which started the streak) coming by decision. Even though all those fights have gone to the scorecards, they’ve mostly been exciting contests, and he’ll be a challenge for any opponent they book him against. If he can change things up and get to 125 lbs., he very well could find a new lease on his career. The UFC should at least give him that chance.

T-Mo delays HTC Amaze 4G online orders due to 'unforeseen issue,' has other recommendations

Hot off the heels of the One X and EVO 4G LTE spending some prolonged time at customs, now another member of HTC’s sensational family appears to be feeling the rigorous effects of the ITC. According to a recent email acquired by TmoNews, it looks as if the Magenta carrier is delaying shipments of the HTC Amaze 4G in the US, saying it’s facing “an unforeseen issue with receiving the product from the manufacturer,” and that it doesn’t know when the handset will be up for grabs again. What’s also interesting here, however, is T-Mobile going as far as recommending Sammy’s Galaxy S Blaze 4G as a substitute — which, let’s face it, can’t be good news for HTC. Here’s to hoping this all gets sorted out relatively soon. In the meantime, you can check out the aforementioned email in its entirety at the source below.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

With UFC on Fuel 3 win, The Korean Zombie earns title shot against Aldo-Koch winner from UFC 149

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chan_Sung_Jung_180.jpg

Chan Sung Jung’s night just keeps getting better. After an incredible win over Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel 3 Tuesday night, “The Korean Zombie” was awarded with two “Fight Night” bonus checks for the fight, and now he’s got something even bigger to look forward to: a title fight.

That’s the word from UFC President Dana White, who texted Fuel TV’s Ariel Helwani to pass along the news that Jung has leapfrogged Hatsu Hioki in the UFC Featherweight Title picture, and will take on the winner of UFC 149′s Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch bout later this year.

Hioki had the spot firmed up, but the combination of him turning down a title fight at UFC 149 and Jung’s spectacular fight with Poirier puts him further down on the ladder. Jung will enter the title fight later this year on the strength of three highly impressive wins.

First up was his victory over Leonard Garcia in a rematch of their crazy brawl in the WEC in 2010. In that rematch early last year, Jung pulled off the very first twister submission in UFC history. When he returned to action last December, he added another incredible highlight when he knocked out Mark Hominick – who had just went five rounds with Aldo earlier that year – in under seven seconds.

But Tuesday’s win may have been his best. Against a well rounded and highly skilled young opponent in the 23-year-old Poirier, Jung showcased a superior grappling game, an unpredictable striking attack, and a very adept submission game. After a fantastic start through three rounds, Jung then landed a flying knee to drop Poirier, which opened him up for a D’Arce choke, which he used to choke Poirier unconscious.

Now he’ll get his opportunity to either unseat Aldo, or take the title away from a newly crowned Koch. Either way, that shot is now in view.

Penick’s Analysis: That’s absolutely the right move for the UFC. There’s only a couple of months between the fights, so it gives Jung a good six to seven months of preparation for his first ever title fight. Given how much improvement he’s continued to show from fight to fight in the UFC, that can only be a good thing. Add in three incredible performances in a row, a rabid and rapidly growing fanbase, and it’s right for the UFC to put him into a title fight as quickly as possible. He was awesome on Tuesday night, and regardless of what he does or doesn’t have to offer Champ Jose Aldo or current challenger Erik Koch, he’ll be an immensely exciting challenger.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura

While we’ve still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they’ve discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It’s a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there’s a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme’s wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked

Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It’s a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you’re presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into “move” mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It’s a tricky, difficult game, but it’s a great brain teaser — and definitely a keeper.

Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier will answer these three questions

On Saturday, the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix will come to a conclusion and the lightweight belt will be tested. When the fights are over, we’ll have answers to these questions:

1. Where do Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier stand in the heavyweight division? Both Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier are expected to be brought over to the UFC after this fight. While Strikeforce originally promised the grand prix winner a fight in Strikeforce after the win, every other heavyweight in their employ is now in the UFC. It’s more likely that they will be in the UFC sooner than later, and how they perform in this Saturday’s bout will decide what kind of challenge they will be given.

A strong performance can ensure the winner starts near the top of the ladder, fighting in an elimination bout. A weak, boring performance means the loser may end up having a long way to fight before getting anywhere near UFC gold.

2. Is Gilbert Melendez one of the world’s best lightweights? Though fighting in one of the most packed weight classes, Melendez hasn’t fought Frankie Edgar, Benson Henderson or any of the other top lightweights of the UFC, so it’s hard to know where to rank him. With Josh Thomson, Melendez will get a chance both to prove himself against a tough opponent and a shot at winning the rubber match.

3. Who deserves a shot at the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt? Since Dan Henderson left for the UFC, the Strikeforce light heavyweight strap has been sitting on a shelf, collecting dust. Saturday’s bout between Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and Mike Kyle will help Strikeforce decide who should get that shot at the vacant title.

What questions are missing? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

If Apple changes to a 4-inch screen in the next iPhone (iPhone 5,1), how could they do it while minimizing impact on users and developers? Assuming everyone wants a bigger screen, how does Apple implement it without breaking existing applications, causing backwards compatibility problems, and otherwise fragmenting the platform and frustrating stakeholders? Let’s try to figure that out.

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

UFC on Fuel 3 Results: Tom Lawlor knocks Jason MacDonald out in the first round

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

After losing three of his last four fights, “Filthy” Tom Lawlor picked up a much needed win on Tuesday at UFC on Fuel 3 in Virginia, knocking out Jason MacDonald in just 50 seconds.

MacDonald, who himself had lost two of three coming into the event, attempted to bring the fight to the ground early. However, Lawlor stuffed the attempt, then connected on a perfect punch to the jaw of MacDonald that hurt him badly. A follow-up to the back of the ear sent MacDonald to the ground, and one more punch later, the fight was stopped.

It was Lawlor’s first win since a decision over Patrick Cote in October of 2010. MacDonald has now been stopped in the first round in consecutive fights, and has lost three of four since returning to the UFC.

Forthcoming 4G networks could interfere with TV in 10 percent of UK homes

If you live in the UK and a 4G wireless tower is going up right next to your house, you might want to hold off on the excitement. LTE networks occupying the 800MHz spectrum could cause some serious interference (sound familiar?), capable of knocking out around two million households’ free terrestrial TV channels. An independent company has been set up to lessen the effects of the wayward waves and is installing government-subsidized filters in residences across the country. But even its valiant efforts could leave up to 8,500 homes without Freeview, as non-traditional antenna setups aren’t covered by the public fund. Meanwhile, eager Brits continue to patiently line up for some kind of semblance of a 4G network.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading — a save button is still presented, of course, in case you’re convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We’d like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon — like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won’t notice the icon or change in wording as they’ll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you’ll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Windows 8 getting a built-in PDF reader, Metro-style

For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn’t Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they’re working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it’s clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We’ve posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google’s cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX — a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

Tim Kennedy makes a convincing Black Swan (VIDEO)

Strikeforce middleweight contender is waiting on a date, time, and place for his expected fight with champion Luke Rockhold. While he has the time, he’s working on his acting chops. Is it just me, or does he make a convincing “Black Swan?” He already did a great job as Katy Perry, so what else do we want to see Kennedy try? He seems to be a fan of costumes, so Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind?” Capt. Willard from “Apocalypse Now” could bring in both his military background and love of make-up. If Strikeforce keeps him (inexplicably) on ice much longer, Kennedy will be up for an Academy Award soon.

LG’s Optimus LTE II ships this week in Korea, nails down a few more specs

Image

Just in case the world forgot which phone was first with 2GB of RAM, LG has pushed out another press release for its Optimus LTE II which ships this week in Korea, just as promised. The detailed specs reveal this version ships with a 4.7-inch True HD IPS LCD, and while many of its specs (8MP camera, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU) are identical to its predecessor, it weighs in at an extra 10g, likely owing to the larger 2,150mAh battery. As mentioned previously it also has support for wireless charging and, naturally, the Optimus UI 3.0 detailed earlier. There’s still no word on when we’ll see this one outside of Korea but for now a few specs and pictures will have to hold us over.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: News on Urijah Faber, Ronda Rousey, Matt Mitrione and more

Here’s the latest fights to be made, just for you:

– Erik Koch and UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo put on their best Member’s Only jackets and headed to the mountains to officially announce their bout at UFC 149 in Calgary.

– After UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and pulled out of their July 7 bout, Urijah Faber will still fight at UFC 148. His opponent is still to be determined, and interim title belt will be on the line.

– Ronda Rousey has a date for her first championship defense, kinda. She will fight Sarah Kauffman in August, but an exact date and location has not yet been announced.

– In what is already my favorite match-up of the summer, Siyar Bahadurzada is stepping in to face Thiago Alves at UFC 149. Yoshihiro Akiyama had to pull out of the bout with Alves after an undisclosed injury.

– Days after UFC on Fox 3, heavyweight bouts were added to UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles. Matt Mitrione will fight Rob Broughton and Oli Thompson will fight Phil De Fries.

Care to make predictions on any of these bouts? Go for it in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Razer's Ouroboros mouse outed by the FCC, transforms to fit lefties

Looking for a rodent to help you frag your way through the competition, southpaw style? The FCC may have just uncovered your new best friend: The Razer Ouroboros gaming mouse. Like the Cyborg RAT series, the Ouroboros features a sliding palm rest and swappable side panels to better fit your mitt. Unlike the RAT, however, Razer’s rodent is completely symmetrical, and therefor, ambidextrous. While Ouroboros may not actually devour its tail, it can at least detach it, switching between wired and wireless modes with relative ease. The versatile vermin appears to pack nine buttons (the regular left and right triggers, three buttons on each side, plus the mouse wheel), a toggle for on-the-fly DPI adjustments, left / right trigger locks, compatibility for Windows 7 and MAC OS X and a charging stand. No word yet on the device’s max DPI sensitivity or price point, but we’ll let you know when Razer makes things official. In the meantime, feel free to browse the rodent’s manual at the source link below.

UFC on Fuel 3 Results: Cody McKenzie submits Marcus LeVesseur with first round guillotine

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Minnesota’s Marcus LeVesseur started off strong in his UFC debut against Cody McKenzie on Tuesday night, but a mental mistake led to another guillotine choke win for the Alaskan at UFC on Fuel 3.

LeVesseur took McKenzie down almost immediately, but the fight came back to the feet quickly. LeVesseur then dropped McKenzie with some strikes against the cage, but then followed him to the ground. After attempting to pass and work from the top, LeVesseur sat in McKenzie’s guard and McKenzie slowly locked in the guillotine choke. He rolled it over, and LeVesseur was forced to tap.

The loss was LeVesseur’s first since 2010, and snapped a three fight winning streak. For McKenzie, the win halted a two fight losing skid inside the Octagon.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren’t blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you’d like to create your AR sculpture — it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn’t matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you’re done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your ‘brush’ — but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app’s internal workings, it’s hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is — and judging by the developer’s affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn’t perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice — and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: “The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future.”

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

UFC on Fuel 3 Results: Donald Cerrone toys with Jeremy Stephens for three rounds, earns impressive decision win

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Donald Cerrone was well on his way to establishing himself as one of the top tier lightweights in the UFC in 2011 before feeding into the trash talk of Nate Diaz and losing a decision at UFC 141. However, he appears to have learned from that poor showing, as he dominated Jeremy Stephens on Tuesday night at UFC on Fuel 3 to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Stephens has been a long time veteran of the UFC, this being his 14th bout inside the Octagon, but he was rendered essentially inept for 15 minutes against “The Cowboy.”

Cerrone started with leg kicks early and often, and as the first round wore on, and his respect for Stephens’ attack began to wane, Cerrone started clowning around in the cage. He danced, he threw vicious combinations when Stephens least expected it, and he battered Stephens’ lead leg with more and more kicks.

This attack continued through to the final horn, with Cerrone barely suffering a scratch in the bout. It was perhaps the most one-sided striking performance of his career, and against a longtime UFC vet in Stephens it was one of his most impressive as well.

He’s now won five fights in six UFC appearances, and will look to get back into the conversation of elite UFC lightweights sooner rather than later. Stephens dropped to an even 7-7 in the Octagon with the loss.

Penick’s Analysis: Even though it was essentially 15 minutes of Cerrone toying with Stephens, that may have been the most impressive thing he’s done. Making it look that easy against a talented veteran was fascinating to watch, and had that version of Cerrone showed up in Las Vegas in December, it would have been a much more difficult fight for Nate Diaz. With Anthony Pettis needing an opponent for September, Cerrone seems like a very suitable option after that performance.

LG promotes Optimus UI 3.0 ahead of new phone launches

Android Central

With its new range of Android 4.0 devices, LG's make a clean break with its old user interface design, starting over with the new Optimus UI 3.0. And in the run up to the launch of its upcoming flagship phones, the Optimus 4X HD and Optimus LTE II, LG's officially announced its new UI, which it says is designed to add new features, while being "unobtrusive and simple."

Of course, we've seen LG's new ICS-based software a few times before, including during our hands-on time with the Optimus 4X HD at MWC and CTIA. But until now LG's remained relatively quiet about exactly what's new in the new Optimus UI.

Among all the new features, LG's highlighting its re-vamped lockscreen, which allows the phone to be unlocked by dragging anywhere on the screen to create a window through to the apps or launcher below. And changes to pattern lock allow common apps to be automatically loaded while security features are enabled, too.

Also of interest is the new voice shutter, which enables the phone to take photos in response to voice commands. And just like leading phones from HTC and Samsung, LG's included burst-shot mode, and the ability to automatically pick the best shot from a series of snaps.

Other additions include a "downloads" category in the app drawer , and the ability to customize icons for individual app shortcuts. All interesting stuff, and we're eager to see how these features work in practice when we get our hands on LG's new stuff.

LG says Optimus UI 3.0 will launch on the Optimus LTE II in Korea this week, and internationally on the 4X HD in June. We've got the full press release after the break.
